The report also said 2023 was the slowest for home sales in almost three decades, following record-breaking months for the market in 2021 and 2022.

In addition to the slowest housing markets, Creditnews Research ranked the fastest-selling ones in the top 100 most populous metropolitan areas in the U.S. 

The study marked a major shift in best selling markets since the COVID-19 pandemic with none of the top 10 metros pre-COVID on the list today.

The fastest selling metros were all located on the East Coast and in the Midwest, while seven of the 10 slowest selling metro areas were in southern states.

The top 10 fastest-selling metros and their median days on the market were:

  • Hartford, CT (8 days)
  • Rochester, NY (9 days)
  • Syracuse, NY (9 days)
  • Harrisburg, PA (9 days)
  • Richmond, VA (11 days)
  • Grand Rapids, MI (11 days)
  • New Haven, CT (11 days)
  • Boston, MA (12 days)
  • Columbus, OH (12 days)
  • Worcester, MA (12 days)

The top 10 slowest-selling metros were:

  • Austin, TX (66 days)
  • McAllen, TX (53 days)
  • Poughkeepsie, NY (51 days)
  • San Antonio, TX (49 days)
  • New Orleans, LA (48 days)
  • Jacksonville, FL (42 days)
  • Cape Coral, FL (41 days)
  • Colorado Springs, CO (41 days)
  • Deltona, FL (39 days)
  • New York, NY (37 days)
