During his time at Arkansas, he met Jimmy Johnson, a fellow teammate. Jones would later hire Johnson as head coach of the Cowboys after purchasing the team.

Jones earned a majority of his fortune thanks to investments in the oil industry. His first million in oil investments as an oil wildcatter came in the 1970s. He still invests in drilling opportunities today, and he also invests in retail and residential real estate projects.

In 2018, Jones became the controlling shareholder in Comstock Resources, a publicly traded Texas oil and gas company. He bought the Cowboys in 1989 for $150 million.

His Dallas mansion is No. 8 on D Magazine’s list of the 100 Most Expensive Homes in Dallas 2017 edition. It is a 14,044-square-foot Mediterranean-style villa with an estimated market value of $28.1 million. He bought it for $6 million in 1992.

The home sits on a 4.69-acre property in Highland Park, Dallas. It is a two-story home built in 1931 and includes six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, six fireplaces, and marble flooring. There are also amenities, including a pool, spa, tennis court, and an elevator. The property is surrounded by trees that form privacy.

Jones’ Florida mansion, on the other hand, is located in Santa Rosa Beach. It is an 11,482-square-foot beach getaway with an estimated value of $5.6 million.

The home was built in 2005 and includes six bedrooms, 11 bathrooms, and an elevator. Jones bought the property in 1993, just six months after his Dallas mansion, for $643,000.

The home also features a short walk to the beach, a pool, natural lighting, and views of the ocean it borders.

Jones’ Cowboys are 8-3 in 2023 and are looking to compete for their first Super Bowl since the ’90s. They face the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football in Week 13.
